Germany - Bavaria, Wine & The Romanic Road

The Romantic Road is Germany's best known and most popular tourist route, with a myriad of fairytale castles, medieval towns and picturesque scenery along the journey.

The Romantic Road is Germany’s best known and most popular tourist route, with a myriad of fairytale castles, medieval towns and picturesque scenery along the journey. Bavaria is a beautiful region with national parks, sun-drenched vineyards, enchanting forests and picture-postcard towns – a spectacular place to relax and unwind.

A family-run, traditional hotel located in the market square of Schlüsselfeld, the Hotel Gasthof Zum Storch is the perfect location to explore the surrounding area of Franconia. Offering a warm welcome, hotel facilities include multiple cosy areas for dining/relaxing and an outdoor terrace and bar. Guest rooms are located in 2 buildings and are comfortably equipped with telephone, TV and many have walk-in showers.

Day 1

Please Note: Tour pick-ups start on Friday 10th September, with overnight travel, from Dover to Calais and onto your overnight hotel.

Day 2

After breakfast, we continue our journey through Germany, stopping for lunch in the picturesque town of Limburg an der Lahn. Famous for its timber-framed buildings, quaint streets and impressive cathedral, this charming medieval town is full of character. We then continue on to our hotel in Bavaria, where there will be time to settle in before dinner and an evening at leisure.

Day 3

Join us today as we visit the vibrant historic Bavarian city of Bamberg, built across seven hills like Rome. In the old town you will find the imperial cathedral with intricate carvings, an exquisite altar and the papal tomb. Wander through the extraordinary rose garden where over 450 roses burst into life during the summer months or admire the Old Court and fresco adorned old Town Hall which sits on the bridge spanning the River Regnitz where you will discover a mix of medieval and baroque architecture. The city is also well known for its nine breweries which create over fifty types of beer which you may like to sample with a relaxing lunch!

Day 4

We begin our morning with a guided walking tour of Rothenberg ob der Tauber, the most photographed of the towns along the Romantic Road route. Perhaps one of Germany's best preserved medieval walled towns with an imposing town hall, stately towers, gothic churches, castle and timber framed houses, it creates a scene of fairy-tale proportions. Browse the traditional shops and enjoy lunch in one of the many cafes serving local cuisine. We return to our hotel for a speciality cold meat, cheese & bread platter with regional products and four wines to taste.

Day 5

A leisurely morning to enjoy Schlüsselfeld at your own pace. Explore the charming market square, browse the local shops or simply relax in the hotel and soak up the atmosphere of this traditional Franconian town. This afternoon, we visit a traditional Franconian family brewery for a guided tour and beer tasting. Well known in the region for its brewing heritage, we'll learn about the brewing process before sampling the finished product for ourselves. We return to the hotel for dinner followed by evening entertainment.

Day 6

Join us today for a morning guided walking tour of Nuremberg, the second-largest city on Bavaria. With plenty of time this afternoon to continue exploring the medieval city with its mighty Imperial Castle where Emperors and knights once roamed, stroll through winding alleys and along historic walls or visit the Craftsmen's Courtyard to see traditional crafts and skills from gingerbread making, wood turning, stained glass making and goldsmiths. In the heart of Nuremberg you will find the largest half-timber framed house in Germany, the Weinstadel next to the river and Executioner's Tower.

Day 7

Sadly it's now time to say a fond farewell to our hotel as we begin our journey home, again with regular comfort stops, to our overnight accommodation arriving in time for dinner.

Day 8

Travel back to Calais then Dover and home.
