Holiday Preview

The First World War finally came to an end at eleven o'clock on the morning of 11th November 1918. One hundred years after the end of the Great War, our commemorative tour explores the poignant battlefields sites, museums and memorials dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in Flanders Fields.

Your Hotel

Mercure Roeselare is a 4 star hotel located just outside the pleasant Belgium town of Roeselare, and is only a short drive from Bruges, Ghent and Ypres. The hotel has a large restaurant and bar area with floor to ceiling windows. Each of the 87 stylish bedrooms is equipped with TV, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities.

Dinner, 2 nights only (not included on 2nd night in Ypres).

Day 1
We depart West Wales and travel to Dover for our crossing to Calais. On arrival in Calais we continue onto our hotel in Roeselare.

Day 2
Today we visit the Flanders Battlefields around Ypres. The tour will include visits to:

Essex Farm where John McCrae wrote his famous 'In Flanders Fields' poem. The German cemetery in Langemark. Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passendale, the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the world and the Irish Peace Tower amongst others. The Welsh War Memorial. Sanctuary Wood/Hill 62 Museum to see the preserved trenches and museum. Hill 60 mine craters and the New Zealand Memorial.

Following free time in Ypres, we will finish the day at The Menin Gate, to witness the emotional Last Post Ceremony (every evening at 20.00hrs).

Day 3
Today we head over the border into France for a full day around The Somme Battlefields. The tour will include visits to:

The Canadian Memorial on Vimy Ridge. Newfoundland Memorial Park at Beaumont Hamel which remembers the Newfoundlanders, French, British and German armies who died on this site. Thiepval Memorial, a memorial to the officers and men who lost their lives in the Somme and has no known grave. Lognagar Crater, the largest crater ever made by man in anger is now a unique memorial to all those suffered in the Great War.

Day 4
After breakfast, we make our way to Calais and our journey home with comfort stops en route.
